The “A Biography Book for New Readers” series greatly resembles the very popular “Who Was/Who Were” series with its larger font, frequent illustrations, and chronologically arranged narrative style text。 The reading level is not quite as challenging as the “Who Was/Who Were” Books, but it is not, as the name states, a biography for beginning readers。 The reading level is clearly designed for third-fifth graders, and with its colorful sidebars, timelines, a quiz, glossary, outstanding “Jump into The “A Biography Book for New Readers” series greatly resembles the very popular “Who Was/Who Were” series with its larger font, frequent illustrations, and chronologically arranged narrative style text。 The reading level is not quite as challenging as the “Who Was/Who Were” Books, but it is not, as the name states, a biography for beginning readers。 The reading level is clearly designed for third-fifth graders, and with its colorful sidebars, timelines, a quiz, glossary, outstanding “Jump into the think tank” prompts, and bibliography, this is an excellent choice for that age group。 Illustrations by Alessandra Santelli are realistic and augment the text well。 In this title in the series, author Rachelle Burk emphasizes the hard work and sacrifice made by Simone Biles on her journey to becoming the most successful gymnast to date。 Details from a not so perfect early life are included, but the majority of the text centers on her rapid rise to elite and Olympic gymnastics competitor。 The series uses a variety of authors and illustrators, and while I preferred the work done by the duo who created The Wright Brothers, Burk and illustrator Steffi Walthall do a great job maintaining the style and quality I am now expecting from the series。Thanks for the preview copy, Amazon Vine。 。。。more

This is a fun, accessible, and pretty comprehensive bio of Simone Biles。 It starts off with a brief intro to Simone and gymnastics that doesn’t require the reader have prior knowledge of the subject。 Her story is told well and the style, together with glossary and questions at the end, open a lot of good opportunities for discussion with a young reader。 Plus, Simone’s story is inspirational and she can be a good role mod for kids。 Illustrations are fun too! Overall, would recommend。

We were fortunate enough to have met the author, Rachelle Burk, during an Author visit at school。 Her energy is an inspiration to both children and adults。 When asked to read a preview of her Simone Biles story I was both honored and excited because she was just starting the story when we met! My daughter and I read this story together and we both loved it。 She is a competition dancer and is committed to daily practices so she connected to the commitment and had stars in her eyes for how far Simone took her success。 She also was touched by her hard start in life, especially being separated from her two older siblings。As a parent reading this book, I love that this story is told with inserts of facts/myths, timelines, and amazing illustrations。 The message we took from her story is an inspiration to rise above your circumstances whether it’s home life or cancelled Olympics and to put forth your personal best and never give up。 This book is great for all ages。 You can read to your child, let them read to you, or take turns like we did。 。。。more

Rachelle Burk does an exceptional job of capturing Simon Biles' determination, discipline, and athleticism to become the first African American to win the all-around title in the U。S。 National championships and a world-renowned Olympic gold medalist。 A perk: the text is easily accessible by young readers who are transitioning from picture books to middle-grade nonfiction。 Rachelle Burk does an exceptional job of capturing Simon Biles' determination, discipline, and athleticism to become the first African American to win the all-around title in the U。S。 National championships and a world-renowned Olympic gold medalist。 A perk: the text is easily accessible by young readers who are transitioning from picture books to middle-grade nonfiction。 。。。more

The story of Simone Biles, by Rachelle Burk, is an easy to read biography for young readers。 The timeline of events in her life create natural chapters which are demonstrated in the table of contents。 When reading about Simone in the first chapter, the reader can close their eyes and picture her doing backflips off a variety of objects as described。 We can relate to her being that “ball of energy” as we think of young children running around as if they have a motor that never stops。 While readin The story of Simone Biles, by Rachelle Burk, is an easy to read biography for young readers。 The timeline of events in her life create natural chapters which are demonstrated in the table of contents。 When reading about Simone in the first chapter, the reader can close their eyes and picture her doing backflips off a variety of objects as described。 We can relate to her being that “ball of energy” as we think of young children running around as if they have a motor that never stops。 While reading the story, the reader is introduced to an array of new vocabulary words。 Each new word is printed in a bold font which indicates its introduction to the readers。 This gives the reader the ability to apply their use of context clues to determine their meanings。 However, these words may also be located in the back of the book along with their definition in the glossary section。 At the end of each chapter you will find a timeline of events that has been discussed。 Readers will also be given an opportunity to test their knowledge later on at the end of the book。 Great addition to any school or classroom library。This biography covers many events; some are known to those that had the opportunity to witness the talented gymnast in the Olympics。 Other events of her life were a surprise to me, as I am sure it will be to others。 This biography covers her life through her ups and downs。 It describes her determination in achieving the goals she set for herself。 It will inspire kids to look at life and all its possibilities and not just its failures。 The Biography of Simone Biles shows that no matter what your circumstances are growing up, you can achieve your goals。 Even if your goals seem impossible, you can do it。 You just need confidence in yourself and the determination to achieve it。 。。。more
